Marjorie Paterson

20th century artist

Marjorie Paterson was an artist whose work deserves a wider than family audience. She was born in Grangemouth in 1902. She studied at the Bristol Municipal School of Art, now part of the Royal West of England Academy Schools. Then in 1925 Marjorie enrolled at the Slade School of Art as a part-time student for two terms of drawing. Her tutor was Vanda Cook. In 1930 back in Bristol she joined Clifton Arts Club and the club’s centennial booklet notes that she ‘was a hardworking member of the committee. A firm character, she enforced silence at their painting evenings with a large handbell.’
We don’t know how much work Marjorie tried to sell on completion of her studies at the Slade. We do know she had independent means. We do know that she received commissions for children’s book illustrations. We are delighted to be able to share a selection of her work.
